Destination Fort Boyard

An imposing stone fortress built out at sea

Strategically located in the bay of Aix Island, Fort Boyard was originally designed to protect the estuary of the Charente River and the military arsenal in Rochefort, at a time when the limited firing range of land-based cannons made these key assets vulnerable to attack. But the progress made in artillery power between 1804 and 1859 was more rapid than the construction of the Fort, and this rendered the Fort redundant before it was ever even completed. The edifice later became a prison for the Communard rebels waiting to be deported to New Caledonia… Today it has found new fame as the TV set for an internationally famous game show.
Our cruises include guided commentary and provide passengers with a spectacular view of this stone colossus, which has become the icon of Charente-Maritime heritage
